Backing Up For Transfer ??

Hi all,

New to Mac, it would really help if someone could give a bit of advice.

When you first start a new Mac, an option comes up allowing you to transfer the settings, apps etc from another Mac from through Firewire.

I have a 15” MBP and have decided to upgrade it to a 17”. A friend wants to buy the 15” tomorrow but I will not get the 17” in time and was originally hopping to still have the 15” when setting up the new notebook.

Is there a way I can do some kind of backup so that when I first start the 17” I can plug an external HD, and the Mac will think it is linked to another Mac and get the data from it??

You could clone your current drive onto an external Firewire drive using CarbonCopyCloner or an alternative. You should then be able to boot from the new machine and use Migration Assistant to get your data across.

Unfortunately it is too late now as I have deleted the HD and reinstalled OSX. I did call the apple store support but they said it was impossible to do without the original machine so I took their word for it.
