Hi,

So I know that this subject has been discussed in various ways on this and other forums, but my situation is a bit particular, and my iMovie files are extremely important, so I just want to make sure I do everything correctly.

I will be doing an erase & install of my iMac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Before I do this of course I want to backup my iMovie files.

It is important to note that at this time, half of my iMovie events are on my Mac HD, while the other half are already on my external (not backup files, just original files).

Now, I have read that in order to backup and restore your iMovie files, you can first use Finder to directly drag your 2 folders "iMovie events" and "iMovie projects" from your internal HD to your external HD, and then move them back to the same location in your internal HD after the erase and install.

However, if possible I would simply like to first move all my iMovie event files to the external HD, and leave them there after the erase and install, as my HD is too full anyway.

I have a couple of questions question with this:

1. According to this official Apple support site about moving iMovie events and projects to another drive, you must do it directly in iMovie (in contrast to doing it in Finder). The problem is that the reason I am doing an erase and install in the first place is because my computer is constantly freezing, and I can't really operate iMovie effectively, especially not long enough to copy the large amount of files I need to copy.

2. If I move these files over to my external HD using finder, will they still be able to be read correctly by iMovie if I just leave them on the external drive?

I guess the other possibility would be to first do the normal backup and restore, and then move the files back to my external, but there must be a better way than this.

Please let me know, thanks!

James
