Hi! I'm considering jailbreaking my iPhone 4, but before I do so I want to backup all of my messages/SMS and contacts. Is is possible to do this? I don't know if it is possible to backup my phone in iTunes, and then jailbreak the phone and later on extract all my messages and contacts back on the phone. I've been looking on some 3rd party apps that do this kind of thing, but I'm not sure if those work and if there are any free apps that do the same thing.

Help is appreciated as always!

iCloud saves all of that stuff, backup with iCould and restore/jailbreak to your hearts content and nothing will be lost.

Hello. If I use evasi0n, will I still need to backup all my iphone data? my contact list is especially precious.

If it's precious then shouldn't you be backing up all the time? JB or no JB... I always back up my iDevices.

ok. thanks for your replies. i have decided not to j-break for now. will probably see what comes with ios7

Care to elaborate why not? It really doesn't make a difference for your contact if you are jailbroken or not.
