I'm doing it with the iPhone, but since I set it up a while ago I forgot how to do it. All I remember was that I didn't need to bother with terminal anymore since it's easier to create an alias under Mountain Lion (I'm using 10.8.4).

LOL. My guess is he is talking about setting up an alias to point the iTunes backup folder, the one where the iPad / iPhone backups are saved, to an external hard drive. Unfortunately, I have no idea how that is done on a Mac, though I've done it on Windows.
