So today I decided to use an one or two year old WD 1tb Elite harddrive which was originally holding my old PC's information. When I connected it, it said that I needed to delete the old PC stuff as it was not compatible (that's fine it was all junk). Next it prompted time Machine to open up and start backing up. Thats fine, but does it matter which software I use to back it up, I am fairly sure WD has software for backing up (at least on the PC it did). Do I need to download any of the WD firmware or any updates or will Time Machine work just fine with Mac Mountain Lion. Because when the Drive was made OSX Lion was not even out.

Thanks, I realize this is a bit of a jumble, my apologies!

Don't use any of the WD software. Just format the drive and let Time Machine run. It will do all you need. It won'd matter if the drive is a little old.
