Ok, I'm not asking the pros or cons of using an SD card for Time Machine backups, I'm asking if, if you did backup to an SD card, how would you restore from said backup? Would the OS X installer recognise the inserted SD during the restore process the same way it recognises a USB external HD?

That would work, but bear in mind TM backups will get very big, very fast.
Timemachineditor can help here by reducing the backup schedule to a more reasonable frequency.
Personally I'd use CCC for backing up, set it to do auto daily backups, this way you can boot directly from the SD card and use CCC to restore your system.
You could also just open the SD and cherry pick individual files if you choose.
Either way you should get the largest SD card you can justify.
