Backing up

Hi there folks, I wonder if anybody would be able to give me some pointers as to how to back up an external hard drive to another external hard drive using a mac pro desktop (OSX 10.6.8)? Time machine doesn't seem able to do it, or so my colleague says.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Maybe try using Super Duper or Carbon Copy to clone the drive to a second external drive or to an image file then to the second drive

Yes, both Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper will both copy any drive to any other drive (regardless of being internal or external).
