I know theres lots of posts out there about this matter but i just want to be sure that my backing up procedure will work.

Coming from linux i figured that the profiles are the same in the fact that if one backs it up does a fresh install and places the profile folder back it will act as nothing has happened, is this true for MacOSX

If that is true is the best method to do such a task to archive the whole profile folder into a tar.gz

tar -czfp $NAMET $DIRBACKUP
 
For the most part, yes. If you backup your user's folder, then that'll preserve all your personal files and settings. You'd have to reinstall applications and perhaps alter any system setting changes you made previously.
