Backlight Issue On Safari?

For some reason when I switch to landscape mode on safari when I'm outside in the sun....the screen goes dark and doesn't light up the same as when it is regular......has this happened to anyone else?

Your hand is covering the ambient light sensor.

Where is the ambient light sensor located?

Its on the side without the home button towards the right side of it.
