It seems the only way for the keyboard backlight to turn on is manually. I thought it would turn on if the Ambient Light sensor thought it was necessary, but mine won't turn off unless i use the function key. Is my ambient light sensor messed up or does it only work it?

Look in the keyboard section of system preferences. You should see an option to automatically use the backlight in low light conditions. Set the slider to how long you want the light to remain on. If it's not turning off, it may be set to never.
