backspace & delete stopped working ms word 2004

My Word for Mac program has always worked fine, but now I can't delete text with either the backspace or delete key (I have to highlight and press apple-X). I can delete in other apps, and have the same problem on my Macbook Pro and my desktop G5. "Typing replaces selection" is checked under Preferences/Edit. Changing view to or from "final showing markup", "final", "original", etc. doesn't matter. Track changes is off. BTW, My teens also use these computers, and may have accepted auto updates.
