Backspacing gets slower as it goes - how to fix?

On my Air, if I am typing in a forum, like this one, and need to backspace on something, the backspace will start out one space at a time but will slow way down as it goes on. Whereas on my iPhone, back spacing will start at one letter at a time, then speed up to one word at a time and then go even faster. How can I get the iPad to do that? It gets so annoying watching the cursor slow down as it goes backwards.

does the behaviour continue if you add a second keyboard and switch to it (e.g. if you use English UK add one of the others like English Australia, then use the globe-key to switch between both and recheck)? Is Reduce Motion activated under Settings → Accessibility → Motion?

I don't know. I will try that out. Thanks for the suggestion!

Update: the Gboard works properly. But when I switch back to the iOS keyboard, it still exhibits the same behavior. Very strange.
