BackUp Advice please

I'm thinking about sorting out a sensible backup regime for my MBPro.

I've currently got 2 external HDs; a 160GB 3.5" job and a 100GB LaCie 2.5".

1. Is there a free backup app/utility that i can set to back up as much as possible when one of the drives is plugged in automatically?
2. Can it back up to a partition on the external drive or does it need the whole drive to itself?
3. If there isnt a free app that can do this, what would be a recommended one worth buying?

I recommend SuperDuper! (its a two-click process), but some use Carbon Copy Cloner

Is the free version of SuperDuper sufficient or do you recommend the full paid-for version?

I'm still wondering about the pros and cons of going for a data backup versus bootable backup, hence the question...
