Backup cloud files

When I open Keynote, I get a list of available files in iCloud. Are these files also stored on my Mac? I rather not have to "export" or "save as...." every time I make changes from a different device, however I need local copies so I have Time Machine backups of everything.
Does anyone know if local copied of iCloud files are created?
