Backup disk never stays in order!

I have a quad-core G5 and a second hard drive used as a backup disk. It's an 80 Gig Maxtor SATA in the lower cradle. Every time I open the drive the icons are all over the place; I select 'arrange by name' and they all go into order, but if I close and reopen the drive they're all in disorder again. How do I keep them neatly sorted?
