Presently I'm using a Transcend 250GB drive for backup. Not sure it's the best to use.

Seems it fills and overwrites and to be honest, I have no idea how to restore via that drive.

So is it better to store my files here or to back up? If storing, I'm sure I'll need something bigger than 250GB, suggestions?

Basically how big is the drive you are backing up?
If you want whole drive backups then you want a backup drive equal to it.

I would use Time Capsule/Time Machine, set it up and let it do its thing.

If you dont use a Time Capsule and just want to clone your system drive, then use something like SuperDuper.

Or just use Finder to archive your important docs etc to any external drive/usb stick
