I've got myself a .Mac account and wish to back up my hard drive onto an external one and in Backup I have the options to back up:

Home Folder
Home Folder 2
iLife
Personal Data and Settings
Purchased Music and Video

The external hard drive is big enough to hold all the contents of my hard drive and yet whenever I try it says there is not enough space? Is the home folder 2 simply a duplication of Home Folder for say 2 different locations? If I'm backing up my Music folder within the Home Folder do I still have to back up Purchased Music and Video?

You might want to try SuperDuper to back up to your external drive. You can set it to back up the whole drive so you don't have to mess with backing up individual sections. It's free to try and use, but if you pay you get smart backups which are quicker, and some other features like scheduled backups.
