Greetings,
New to the Mac here. I am learning about the machine in general (1 month) and intricacies in particular.
i am currently working on outlining a decent system backup strategy before I get more involved and have more valuable stuff on the Mac. I am indeed a backup maniac, i,e I want, at any given time, to be able to somewhat restore a failing/failed system in a very short time. Comes from business use of computers: NO excessive downtime allowed for any reason!
Of course, and very surprizingly so, Mac OS does not come with an easy to schedule and use backup tool (but I suppose it's part of Apple "No bloatware on the Mac" issue - IMHO, a little bloatware provides immediate usefulness right out of the box - WELL, WE DO have iLife on board, thank G.)
I have heard about SuperDuper and such. I am also looking into DiskUtility>>NewImage tool onboard the Mac OS. The former I have not tried: anyone know if it is reliable, backs up to external HD, allows for incremental/differential backups, and allows for imaging the whole HD?
I am also looking in he meantime to just make copies of essential files as per following incudent:
i recently, accidentally erased part of my Safari Bookmarks folder - at this time, this is the most valuable data i have on the Mac yet. NOTE: gotta watch out for that DELETE process - things VANISH, not go through the TRASH bin first!
I called AppleCare and they led me through restoring what seems to be the original Bookmarks folder. I just rebuild using History (which I had not deleted, fortunately!)
QUESTION: I want to be able to make a backup/duplicate of the Bookmarks file.
So I go to User>>Library>>Preferences>>com.apple.Safari.plist - which seems to be where Bookmarks are kept and updated (correct or not?) and I can make EITHER a DUPLICATE which on my attached illustration comes out as com.apple.Safari copy.plist or an ALIAS, which comes out on my illustration as com.apple.Safari 2.plist
Same file sizes. Contents hard to decipher of course.
What is actually the difference between DUPLICATE and ALIAS?
I shall appreciate any input - THANKS!\
