I am really enjoying reading comics on my iPad and iPhone through ComiXology's apps (Comics and Marvel). However, I am a bit concerned about building a comics library that I can't really store or backup anywhere. Your iDevices only hold so many comics, and when you are done reading them, you eventually delete them. You can always redownload the ones you purchase. But if for some reason the company stops providing comics (say they lose the rights) their servers could go down.

Are in-app purchased comics being stored somewhere when I backup the device? I don't think so, but maybe I'm missing it.

Are in-app purchases like these comics always stored on Apple's servers for re-download, or could they theoretically go away?
