Hello,
I'm new at video editing with huge files which result from AVCHD in iMovie.
As a result i keep running out of space in my 500 GB MBP.
I bought some external HD to create a SCRATCH disk.
I can't figure out a good backups process and I am overwhelmed with these heavy files.
Sorry if this is too basic for some of you.
I'm scared because i had two laptops which crashed in the past (but I had a good process at that time so I could recover easily).
Also I travel a lot and I need to be able to back up on the go.
Here's what I used to do (and saved my work life as a back up process).
Before video editing i had:
With me when i was traveling:
- a 250 GB macbook , OS and all my files and media in the HD
- an external 500 GB lacie rugged : bootable drive of MBP ( using CCC)
- an external 500 GB lacie rugged : clone of MBP (using CCC)
At home/office:
- an external 500 GB lacie: timemachine
It was very simple!
Now I have with me:
- a 500 GB MBP , OS and doc files
- a 500 GB lacie rugged
- a 500 GB lacie rugged
- a 2 TB G-tech (easier to carry when travelling)
At home/office:
- a 2 TB lacie
I tried this and it doesn't work:
In MBP:
- Keep .mts folders from my sd card (+ a dmg copy i create, for security and to be able to see in imovie. Drawback is it doubles the size of folders).
- Leave iMovies Project
My MBP is almost full!
==> backup on a 500 GB or on 2 TB G-tech.
Scratch disc : I tried 500 GB lacie but it fills up pretty fast too
-iMovie Events
==> but then I don't have a backup of scratch disc!
So maybe I should use the 2 TB G-tech as a scratch disc? It has 2 firewire slots. Is it possible to back it up without having to transfer the files on the MBP (which is full). But how?
I still have my old macbook 250 GB , if this helps.
As you might see I am confused :/ I would really appreciate your help.
I heard about RAID 1 , but it seems better to have 2 independent process/disc of backup. And also a Raid 1 would take a huge space in my travels !
Maybe there is something else very simple, that I am missing because it's the first time I have to deal with these amounts of data.
Thank you and have a great day!
