what's the easiest way to restore a home folder to a new drive? i've been swapping drives in and out of my computer, trying to find the quietest model, so i've got a lot of drives with clean installs. i just want to drop my existing home folder into a new system.
i've been logging in as root, making a .tar file of my home folder, logging in as root under the new drive, and dropping it in place. but i've found that this doesn't always work, for some reason. sometimes all i'll get is my documents, but no settings or prefs.
i'm running a cube, which means setting up two drives in order to do a carbon copy involves taking my optical drive out and temporarily attaching a second HD in its place, which is a serious pain. so the question is, then: is there an easier, more reliable way to duplicate a home folder onto a new system without doing a full drive clone?
