I have recently thought about redoing my storage and backup-system. I have a Time Capsule that I use as a Time Machine-drive, but the setup is not ideal. The main problem is that whenever Time Machine kicks in, in grinds my network down. Everything that involves the network slows down when Time Machine is working. And using the Time Machine-app is quite slow as well, especially launching the app (I just tested it, it took about one minute for it to launch).
I'm using 5Ghz Wifi, so it's as fast as it could be. I think that Time Capsule is just too slow for this use. Which is quite ironic, since this was the thing it was designed for....
So I have decided to re-do this. I'm thinking of getting the 2nd gen Drobo, populate it with HD's and hook it to my Mac with FW800. That should be plenty fast. I would use the Drobo for Time Machine, and I would use the Time Capsule for daily SuperDuper-backup. I would schedule the SuperDuper-backup to run during the night, so it does not matter if it was somewhat slow.
Is there anything so far that sounds like something that would not work?
Besides Time Machine, I would use the Drobo to consolidate some of my external drives. I have one drive that I use as my Aperture library, and another drive that I use for miscellaneous stuff. Neither of those are backed up...
Basically, the Drobo would be running all the time. So that begs the question: how loud is it? I could locate it in a spot where at least some of it's noise would be masked (under the stairs, which is right net to my work-desk), but I would prefer it to be as silent as possible. Now, I know that a HD-enclosure with up to four drives and a fan will not be entirely silent...
