Macbook, from May 2006, original HD replaced by Apple after about 6 months. Recently, the MB is frequently freezing, and sometimes after I either move it or pick it up from a stationary position. I ran SMART utility and it detected overall SMART status: FAILING READ FAILURE. Thinking that this could be the start of the HD going bad? Could this be corrected by wiping the drive and reinstall or just replace it?

Get a new SATA HDD and put it in your MB, ti's quite easy and takes less than 10 minutes.
If SMART announces an impending failure, then most of the time the HDD is dying, although I experienced it otherwise.
