A few weeks ago I got a 1991 StyleWriter printer on ebay. I plugged it in with the power adapter it came with, but it didn't seem to work. No lights, no sound, nothing.

So I went ahead and bought another StyleWriter (they're pretty cheap). It seemed to work! I plugged it in with the new power adapter, saw the light come on and heard noise from inside the printer. I removed it, powered it back on, still working.

BUT... then I tried the previous power supply with the new printer, to see if the power supply was the issue... and now the new printer won't turn on at all. I think the old power supply fried the printer!

My question is, is this something that can commonly happen with old AC power adapters? Will they go bad and destroy equipment like that? This is the first time something like this has happened to me.

It's pretty unusual that an external power supply would fry whatever it's connected to. It's not impossible, but it would be a rare type of failure that would do this.

That being said, I would have tested things just the opposite of what you did. I would have tried the 'new' known-working power supply with the 'old' non-working printer first to see if it would power up.

With the price of modern printers and their amazing capabilities nowadays, what on earth are you using StyleWriters for? Nostalgia?
