bad quality earpiece / speaker.....is this hardware or software...

apoloiges if this had been answered already. i have searched.

have a 1.1 software, then Jailbroken on 02 UK. just got it and love the thing. but i have noticed that calls and iTunes Music Store over wireless sound quite bad. including earpiece, built in speaker and headphones. not unusable but noticably worse than my last handset.

is this a known hardware fault, meaning i need a replacement to fix, or could it be software, and therefore worth re-setting the phone and trying to re-unlock hoping that it solves it. ...

any advice appreciated.

Sounds like hardware to me. But it would be odd to affect both speakerphone (which does NOT sound that good anyway) and the headphones. The headphones should sounds clear, just like the sound quality of an iPod.
