Hi!
I've noticed that some of the movies, and photos, especially the ones that are heavily compressed, are looking somewhat weird. I'm talking about artifacts in black colors in movies and photos. I know that artifacts appear (this is due to compression process - the greater compression, the more artifacts), but on ipod touch artifacts from compression looks so weird (they are greenish messy distortions) and different than on PC or PMP's, that it is somewhat discomfort to watch movies...

The only accepted movies for me are the highest quality ones, with little compression and as least artifacts as possible. Any heavily compressed, medium quality movies looks much worse than on any other portable video player I've seen.

This is really annoying to me... Do you guys know whether it's a software issue or a harware-screen problem? If software then I think Apple should fix it as soon as possible and realease a software uprade fix for this issue.

week 42
and it has nothing to do with "negative black problem" - my screen doesn't suffer from this. My problem is extremely well visible artifacts on black areas of screen, resulting in somewhat weird greenish distortions.

Put it this way, i have used Handbrake to rip a DVD or two, and they look fine on my iPod Touch.

Just used the iPhone preset, there, BTW.

I'm compressing with Xilisoft, and Videora, and Handbrake (for dvd's) with very good quality, but it's not about it. The problem is even visible with preisntalled Apple stuff like globe in "slide to unlock" screen. If you choose globe and max the brightness you'll notice weird artifacts surronding the globe. Same with battery status when you're charging your ipod - there is weird artifacts visible in some areas around battery logo. This shouldn't be visible in properly adjusted screen (gamma/contrast, etc).

And it has nothing to do with compression. Apple just didn't adjusted good our screens in ipod touch. I wonder if it's going to be fixed in future sotware upgrades?
