Bandwith deal breaker?

Thunderbolt 1 and 2 don't seem up to spec with Pcie 2 and 3. I would like to use the the Red Rocket card, but there seems no advantage investing in the new Mac Pro for it will perfom no better (with an expensive tb chassis) than a mbp in this department. Thoughts?
 
Headroom?

these guys are doing it through a chassis and scraping by because the card uses 4 lanes for playback and 4 lanes for rendering. But like the Titanic, we don't have enough lifeboats
