Which do you prefer?

I find for messages or voicemail I like banners but for a calendar appointment or task reminder an alert is better

I would tend to agree. Having a popup for calendar alerts makes sure I notice what it is. For all my other notifications I'll stick with banners.

I use springpad for my tasks. And I was having trouble deciding between banners and alerts for it. But decided the point of the notification is to make me aware that I have something to do.

And banners are kinda out of the way so they don't inconvenience the user. Alerts are like stop watching YouTube and change the air filter ya lazy slob.

I prefer banners. I am jailbroken however and take full advantage of my lockscreen and notification center (and statusbar icons) so I don't have to heavily rely on banners or alerts.

For everything? That would annoy me so much. That's why I used to use MobileNotifier before iOS 5. But each person has their own preferences. Who am I to question yours? Also, nice to see a fellow Coloradan on here :)

I find the banners to be a bit too small, and I find it hard to read.

Love Colorado, moved here in 2005.
