257.88mph apparently on the Mojave Airport runway in California. :D

Looks like they should be good to exceed the 260mph barrier at Bonneville next May. :D

Seriously skinny wings.

wow, so I'm wondering is this the fastest piston driven car? Or is there something else that will go faster still....

Um No

They have a little over 160mph to go;)

Al Teague holds the FIA International records for blown piston engined vehicles on the Mile at 409.978 MPH and on the Kilo at 425.05 MPH

EDIT: what's up with hyperlinking nowhttp://www.ugofadini.com/lsrwdnew.html

Dragsters are faster. ;)

Still massively impressive though as Mad Jew says, considering they ain't designed for balls out straight line top speed.

I wonder what an IRL car could do in the same conditions? or whether an F1 car truly is the fastest single seat, open wheel race car even in a straight line?

which BAR is that? the one for next season (i.e. engine size??) also the frint wing is not the one they used last season

who drove it?

this years one.

no, V10.

I seem to recall reading that they were using specially designed wings to ensure the stability of the car at those speeds.

Alternatively, they could just be running it the lowest wing setting possible on conventional wings, I can't be sure.

BAR test driver Alan van der Merwe.

..
Like the rudder in place of the rear wing.

that's cheating isn't it? mind you... BAR-Honda have been good at that this year. heheheheh.

What an impressively small aero package on that car!

257 is pretty nice, but can they squeeze another 40+mph out of it and break 300?

Still, 257 is faster than most drag racers (other than the Top Fuels), and this car can go around corners too!

I suspect that an F1 car is faster than an IRL car even in top speed, since the IRL car is heavier and has less power.

nah, it can't even beat a DIESEL TRUCK ! (272 mph)

Crikey! look at the smoke!

My old pug 405 diesel used to smoke like that at 27mph! (only usually when going up hills, oh, and I never did manage to get it to go 272Mph, shame really, it was well nippy for overtaking)
