Okay, little disclaimer upfront, I did a quick search and decided to post a new thread anyway.

I am thinking about putting together a cheap-o hi fi system for my dorm this year. I am very much more interested in quality rather that volume here (although I want to be able to turn it up reasonably loud). I know nothing about this stuff, maybe just enough to be dangerous.....

I'm thinking about plugging my laptop via optical into a Trend Audio TA 10 amp and then hooking up a pair of speakers. I realize the quality would not be as high as if I added a DAC and PSU, but I don't have the cash right now, those will have to wait.

Is this the best way to go? I am planning on adding the UD 10 and a PSU later on. Any suggestions on the best bang-for-your-buck pair of speakers (say less than $100?)
