Looking to get the base 16” with 32GB ram and 1TB storage. Did anyone else went for for this config? Does it make sense to stay with the i7 and base gpu?

I don’t do any editing work, just need to extra ram for virtual machines and tons of chrome tabs

Hard to tell.

I configured the base model (6 cores, 5300 GPU with 4GB) to 32GB, 1TB, and it came out to $3,000.
I configured the upgraded model (8 cores, 5500 GPU with 4GB) to 32GB and it came out to $3,200.

You'd get 2 additional cores and upgraded graphics for a relatively small $200 bump.

true but I am also wondering if the i9 will run hotter and louder then the i7?

also I think if I am doing your config I should throw in the extra 100 bucks for the 8gb GPU no?

There’s a MacRumors thread on the i7 vs i9. I think the tldr was that the i9’s are surprisingly better than the i7.

Throwing in the extra $100 would give it better resale value down the line. Although, at that point you’re looking at an extra 300 that you weren’t looking to spend. But on the other hand for $300 extra you get a substantially better machine.

I actually went that route, i7+32G Ram+1T SSD + 4G GPU. I don't do anything heavy and was slightly worried about thermal of i9, so i didn't upgrade the CPU.

I bought a refurb base I7 from Apple for $2,039. I saw a couple video reviews comparing a base model to an upgraded I9. The takeaway was ..."1/2 the cost for 80% or more of the performance." Easy decision for me since I am not a consistent power user.
