How does one cope with only 16GB memory. Write to external SSD as a scratch?

I’m thinking that I need to up the RAM and SSD. Looking at 24 or 32GB Ram, and 512 SSD. What did others choose?

Usual adage applies - buy as much RAM as you can afford.

Apple Silicon does seem more efficient at utilising RAM on native apps than Intel Macs, let alone a Windows PC. Which isn't much help if you're using sloppily coded Electron apps.

What's your workflow that needs more than 16GB?

Using mostly Adobe software - photoshop, indesign, illustrator. And usually have Mac mail, word, acrobat, excel, chrome & safari open

Have a Mac Studio M1 Ultra with 64GB / 1TB

I wanted to upgrade my aging 2017 15” MBP with a custom BTO 16” MBP M4 64GB 1TB but it’s 6-7K.

The Mac mini M4 32/512 can hold me off for another year

It is possible to close apps you're not using. Which I find more palatable than spending £200 per 8GB on RAM!

It's 8x the going rate. 32GB of DDR5-6000 was under £100 in my gaming PC build a couple of months ago.

Possible course of action:
Hold out for about 3 months more.
By then, Apple-refurbished 2024 Minis will probably start showing up in the online Apple Store.

Generally, the discount is around 10% or so.

What this means is that you can get an Apple refurb and get "more for your money" than you would normally get by "buying new".

Apple refurbs are almost always indistinguishable "from new". And you get the full 1-year warranty, same as if it WAS new.

I bought my 2018 Mini in January 2019 that way, and it's still sitting here on the table doing fine almost 6 years later...
