I find cosmology and astronomy fascinating but have never really had the time to do anything about it. Recently while shopping for Christmas gifts I saw a telescope on sale but I couldn't tell if it was a bargain or not because I know nothing about telescopes.

I would like to get a telescope for casual stargazing but one powerful enough for me to be able to see jupiter and its moons.

What do I need to look for with regards to lens etc? Does any one have any telescope recommendations or websites for me to look at.

Basically I would be very happy to be able to see this:

In all seriousness to get a view like that from a telescope your looking at a fairly high magnification factor and a large diameter ...tube?(can't remember the exact wording). The good news I think these kinds of images from some amateur scopes are possible, to get a better idea of what it takes I'd google around for some amateur astronomy pictures like you describe and hopefully they will have a description of their setup.
