Basic iCloud question regarding backup

I want to use icloud to backup my iphone. Will the icloud backup ...backup my contacts stored on my iphone natively ?

All you have to do is make sure Contacts is set to on in the iCloud settings on your device. They are not included in the backup, but are always in iCloud if you do this. Just make sure you're signed in and that switch for contacts is enabled.
