Basic itunes question

I'm not sure when this changed, but when I click to open an mp3 in itunes, it no longer brings the view to the playing mp3. Instead, it sits at whatever had been playing before, making it so that when I then hit the "Play/Pause" button it starts playing whats on the screen, rather than pausing the mp3 I had started playing. How do I make itunes view snap to the mp3 I chose to play after I click it (the mp3)? I'm not referring to ctrl+l.
