Getting tired of searching old forums and google waybacks.
Does anyone have a lightweight Mp4 to Mp3 converter for PPC? (10.4)

My forever go-to has always been Max 0.9.1. It’s a universal binary and it clocks in at about 6MB. It can also be built from source.

Edit to add: Max 0.9.1 also does batch conversions and allows you to create encoding quality presets, as well as extract from CDs. It is a lot simpler than fussing with Audacity or its commercial counterpart, Sound Studio, and the LAME libraries are already in place.

For a first-party only approach...

1. Open the MP4 in QuickTime Player: File > Export > Sound to Aiff/Wave

2. Open .wav or .aiff in iTunes: Advanced > Create MP3 Version

Install Audacity and the LAME library. Drag the mp4 into the window, do any edits that you want to do. Export as mp3 with the presets of your desire. Presto.

You can also edit the tags once you hit export.

I don’t think you need to install the FFmpeg library with the PPC versions of Audacity, but the latest Intel and Apple silicon versions need it. Audacity will let you know if it does need it, and both library installers are easy to find with a quick search.

Where's the Lame library for 10.4?

Argh, I have no idea what to do. If I have to compile, it's not a "basic" converter anymore.

Agreed. :|

I'm having trouble getting Max to work, may have to keep trying.

Max 0.9.1 was the last stable build. The 0.9.2 build was an unstable one, in the event you were trialling that version.

Also not sure if you were compiling from source or just using the binary in the dmg. The latter is the only way I’ve ever used it.

Out of interest, let me try whatever it is you were trying on my iBook G3, as far as encoder settings you were using and source material from which to convert. I’ve done conversions from .m4a lossy audio, though I can’t remember the last time I converted audio in Max from, say, an mp4 video file.

Thanks for all the help though!

No worries!
