How can I batch rename a series of files in a folder using finder?
In Windows Explorer, I can select a group of files in a folder and right click on the group and choose rename, then once I rename one file all the rest take on the same name with just a number different.
This is very useful if you have lots of digital camera photos that all have similar names (dcs001.jpg, dcs002.jpg., etc.) and you have several folders with photo files with the same names (dcs001.jpg, dcs002.jpg., etc.) and you want to combine those files into one folder or batch rename them into something more descriptive.
Thanks for any advice.

Easily done with Automator.

Here is a screenshot of the one I made a while back:

Then once you get that all set up, you go to "File" and "Save as Plugin." This way you select the things you want to rename in finder then Right Click > More > Automator > Select the plugin you just made.

Very Easy :)

Apple also packages every mac with some Apple Scripts to do it.
