battery and hibernation problems

when my macbook pro battery empties it is supposed to turn to hibernation mode, BUT when I plug the energy cable back on, although it was hibernating, I loose everything that was open and working on before it shut down.
I've done all the latest updates on the battery (1.3).
Any help?

macbook pro 15' 2.16 Ghz
