I took my MBP off the charger and opened it and it was at 75% battery. However, the battery icon in the top right corner was still red, as if it was under 20%, which is about where it was when I put it on the charger. I closed it and let it go into sleep for a second, opened it back up and the battery icon is black as normal.

Why did that happen, and does it indicate anything about the battery?

Justa little glitch

Just a little glitch, you probably just didn't give the system time to get around to sorting out the battery status.
