I’ve caught this with watchOS 9.0 on my AW7, and now see it again with 9.1 on the same AW7. I was finally able to snap a picture of it before it went away.

Is anyone else seeing this issue? This is off of a charge from 5 hours ago, but I have seen it in a fresh charge as well.

Any insights?

If it’s the red symbol I believe that’s the “not connected to the phone” icon.
If it’s the lightning bolt that’s when it charging.
Not downplaying this, I just might be missing it.

Interesting if it is that, because the icon definitely looks like a battery with a slash through it.

Not connected to phone symbol. Nothing to do with the battery.. It is the same icon for as many years i can remember.

Pretty easy to test. Turn off wifi on your watch (in Watch control center) and turn off your phone.

But OP has a point, the icon in OP's photo does look more like a battery than a phone.
Thanks Apple, for ambiguous unintuitive icons.

Or Dynamic Island and Dock?

The point is: it is not intuitive, and it is ambiguous. Shouldn't have to go look it up or parse what it means.

In contrast, the phone app icon is 100% unambiguous what it means:

Yeah, I learned most if the quirky stuff when I worked in a store.
To the OPs point it does look like a battery. Sine the Watch can only connect to a phone why not just use the phone icon, you posted, with a line going thru it

Did op learn that his watch simply wasn’t in range of his phone?

Which was weird in itself, because my phone was sitting on the counter behind where both pictures were taken. That's why it appeared to look more like a battery issue than anything. That icon does look like a dead battery.
