My MacBook Pro's battery indicator shows about 15% just before it dies. Is there some way to 'recalibrate' the reading or something?

Depends how old your machine is. Older MBPs could be recalibrated. However is it shutting down completely or using deep sleep?
It does not go to the deep sleep thing anymore. The screen just flashes and the computer shuts off suddenly. Its a mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro. According to the link you posted, apparently it is automatic.
It sounds like it's time for a new battery.
