Hardware: Macbook Pro 13" Intel, model A2251. Purchased directly from Apple when the M1s were just coming out. Specifically wanted Intel because Apple silicon was too new, and I have another use for Intel that I doubt would work with Mxs. I configured it w/1TB and 32GB. Bought at the beginning of '21.
Info: I do not use this laptop much. I may boot it up, update the apps, and not use it for 5 or 18 consecutive days. So by day 18, the battery is completely dead and requires charging just to boot the machine. (I have never used sleeping, hibernation or any of the sort; I ALWAYS completely power down. I almost always wait to close the lid (gently) until I know the laptop has had time to cool.)
Problem: When turned off, battery drains more quickly than it used to. Prior to this upgrade, I could power down, and it would not lose more than a few percent in several days of no use. Let me reiterate (in a different way) that it's just since this update. NOTE: I did NOT change anything when I upgraded the OS. Since I don't use the laptop much, the only rare change I may make is adding a new app, but in this case, I had not added any new apps in a while.
When Problem occurs:
MacOS versions:
Catalina: did NOT have this problem
Big Sur: did NOT have this problem
Monterey: did NOT have this problem
Ventura: did NOT have this problem
Sonoma: did NOT have this problem
Sequoia 15.0: did NOT have this problem
Sequoia 15.0.1: did NOT have this problem
Sequoia 15.1: Problem appeared
Sequoia 15:2: Problem persists
Now, if it's at 100% it will lose 3-5% from evening until morning (less than 24 hours), and perhaps as much as 10% in a 24 hour period. Remember, I used to enjoy not losing more than perhaps 10% over three weeks of no use.
What I've tried: 1.Reseting SMC and 2. NVRAM, 3. turning off all bluetooth, 4. (extra) wifi settings (like wake on), 5. notifications off (I don't want to be annoyed) and 6. a lot more things that don't come to mind right now. 7. I don't use the nap feature, it's off. I don't need bluetooth most of the time; it stays off. 8. There are NO external devices connected to it when off. 9. Checked to make sure power was actually off by turning on CAPS lock when shutting down to verify the light goes out. 10. Apps that I leave open (Don't think this is going to solve it) zsh, iterm (another terminal/console program, and Finder. Again I have always left these apps open when I shutdown, and it has never eaten this much battery. Like I said earlier, I rarely do anything different with this laptop to make me think, "Oh it was that app or that change to the app that caused this." In other word, I've been powering down the laptop for years through the various versions of MacOS with these same apps NOT being closed prior to shutdown, and have enjoyed the battery maintaining itself for many days. 11. Looked at the battery health = good, 12. Looked at the battery use graph = not used during the days I have it powered down. I mean 0% used those days. 13. Used System Monitor to check for apps that are preventing sleep (but I DO NOT use sleep), so of course there are none. 14. Have MalwareBytes so scanning says NO problems. 15 I don't remember the exact command but, Used the pmset command to check for whatever the website told me to look for, however, it returned nothing. Actually, there were a couple of different uses for pmset, but both resulted in NO results, that is it just returned me to the prompt. I think one of the uses was to scan the log for related issues. 16. I have not opened the Macbook, neither has anyone since I've had it (brand new). I read about a Lid Angle Sensor, but I couldn't tell if that was for Intel or Apple Silicon or both. Since I treat all my electronics with respect, and don't use this one that much, I cannot image the LAS breaking down just after the upgrade. Too coincidental. I think that's everything.
Does anyone know anything that will bring back the longer battery life? Thanks,
gentisle
