Hello,

I have just unboxed my new macbook air m2 512GB and when i have opened the lid nothing happened. I plugged the charger and the apple logo came right away…

My questions are:
Is it normal to receive a brand new apple laptop whit no battery charge? Is it bad for the battery? Do I have to send it back?

What is the factory charge and how long lasts in shuted down laptop before doesn’t let you to turn on it?

Is the empty battery sign shows even when your laptop is still not activated.

Thank you in advance.

While it is not normal for any device, it is possible to get a new-in-box product with a battery that has been fully discharged. This can be due to a number of factors, none of which would be considered a defect with the device or battery. It just means that either the battery was not sufficiently charged at the factory, or it has been sitting so long in transit that what charge the device had dissipated before you purchased the unit. There is no set standard for how much of a charge any device gets prior to packaging, and activation has nothing to to with the battery whatsoever.

I would test the battery to see if it hasn't degraded too badly or so. Sitting discharged for some time might decrease the overall battery's life.

Looks pretty normal to me. You can make sure by doing a calibration cycle, which will catch if there has been any further degradation (Charge to full -> leave for an hour -> discharge to 0% -> leave for an hour -> charge to full again).

I will say that I would be pretty surprised if there were any issues, lithium ion batteries can generally withstand being discharged for a month or two. There is a lot of management/safety circuitry in them that prevents them from being discharged to the point of being damaged.

It's worth noting that it's fairly common for Mac batteries to degrade more quickly during the first year than they do afterwards. Battery wear isn't always entirely linear with respect to time (at least according to Coconut Battery's online graph statistics). They can lose up to 10% or so within the first year of normal use, and this doesn't necessarily indicate that anything is wrong with the battery.

Hi Alex Ray. I just received a new macbook air m2 today and had the same problem, where it was dead and had no battery charge. I am curious if you ended up keeping your computer, and if you did keep it, have you had any problems with it since you bought it? Thank you!

It typically would take months for an unused battery to drain completely. Depending on where you buy the computer, such things can happen, say if it is from Best Buy it is not unlikely they left it on the shelf / warehouse since launch day and it is only "new to you" when you get it now. If you buy directly from Apple, with how their supply chain works it can at most be like 2 months old, the battery usually would have more than half its charge.

If this happens to me, and if the return policy allows, I myself will return it. It is more than likely the MacBook will function without issue, but there is still a chance that the battery is faulty, or that being left unused for months and its charge at almost zero will eventually shorten the battery life span at some point.

Seems odd the battery manufacturer cannot be determined. Is that normal for CoconutBattery? If not, where was the device purchased? If not Apple is it possible someone substituted a non-Apple battery?

It is normal. Same for me on M1 Pro bought directly from Apple. It is not practical for anyone to substitute battery in current Mac notebooks.

I missed the "air" word when reading the original post. Does the inability to replace batteries also apply to current Pro laptops? I have seen posts about people replacing batteries in the Pro laptops but they were obviously older otherwise why would they need a replacement battery.

Batteries in current (since 2017 for sure) Pro/Air notebooks is glued in and replacement includes other parts (top case, keyboard...). It is possible to replace on your own just the battery on at least some models, but it is such procedure that no one will do it to "switch" battery. It is best done by service centers. This is well known and well discussed here, search for it and you will find earful.

Hello,
Yes! I am still using the laptop and its working fine. Coconutbattery shows that current capacity is 102% of the disign capacity. I have made over 15 cycles now and i dont see any issues.
How is yours doing?

I picked up a MacBook Air M2 from an Apple Store in London today and it too was completely dead when I got it home. Sounds as though it’s not unusual and I certainly won’t lose sleep over it.
