Some tests that I did that I don't understand...
iPhone 3G using a GoPhone sim. Phone is locked.
Restored the phone using 3.0 restore downloaded fresh from Apple and unplugged as soon as I get the message that the iPhone has been restored and will restart and to leave it plugged in. Since I unplugged it during the reboot and did not set up the phone as a new phone or from a backup, obviously neither of those apply. Battery life in this was is excellent, didn't even use 10% in 8 hours. Apps downloaded from App store and absolutely nothing synced through iTunes. Email and all related settings off, just WiFi and 3G and location services on.
After a day of doing this with excellent battery life, I decide to try finally connecting the phone to iTunes and setting it up as a new phone. I connect it and it prompts me to set it up as a new phone or restore from backup as normal. I choose the as new iPhone option and chose not to only sync calendar and contacts via iTunes and not through MobileMe. All apps synced to phone and phone starts losing battery power, 20% in 3 hours with 0 usage. Not normal.
If I then insert the real iPhone sim from my 3GS iPhone into the 3G, the battery drain stops.
If I unlock the 3G iPhone and use the GoPhone sim, the battery drain problems still happen as long as I connect the phone to iTunes and sync it. If I don't sync the iPhone after restoring and unlock, the battery doesn't drain fast.
What can possibly be happening here to make the battery drain so fast? Oh and the same thing will happen if I go back to 2.2.1 on either a 3G iPhone or a 2G iPhone. Version doesn't matter.
