About once every month or two my late 2016 MBP 15" will drain the battery to dead while the lid is closed and plugged in. It is almost like the charger does the opposite of charging and drains the battery instead.
I "feel" like it has something to do with the charger because I have to unplug and replug in the charger to get it to start charging the MBP and then wait about 2-4 minutes to even get to the point I can boot it up.
