Hello,
Battery in my macbook pro 2015 13'' has been dying for some time. Few months ago it completely stopped charging and it was showing 100% all the time. Which of course was not true because the second I was unplugging the charger, macbook would just die. Battery status was "replace soon"
Anyhow, I went to apple hopping that I can get it done right away only to find out that I have to leave my macbook for few days with them. I always thought that they do this stuff over there. So anyway, I anyway decided not doing this at that time. But the guy did run some diagnostics to verify that battery is bad (he was somehow connecting it with his ipad while doing it) and at the and he said - 'yes, it needs to be replaced'. I went home and guess what, my battery was charging again! Sure it still sucked but it could hold enough charge for about an hour which was good enough for me.
Unfortunately after few months, this started happening again. Showing 100%, not charging, not lasting even a milisecond when unplugged.

What kind of hocus pocus apple guy did and can I do it myself? I did try the "D" diagnostic mode, I did try reseting SMC (r,p,command, option) but both of these didn't change anything.

thanks!

Even if the diagnostic tool did something to cause the battery to charge a little, which I don't know how likely that is, the battery is certainly still on its way out. You should probably find a few days you don't need to use it to leave it with them for a replacement instead of tinker with it to try and get it to hold a charge again.

Had the same kind of thing happen with my iPad mini 2, it would just have the low battery icon show up and not charge. If I unplugged it then replugged it, it would eventually charge and work okay. But one time it didn't so I took it to Apple store and the guy did the diagnostic on it and told me I needed a new battery and could get a refurbished iPad for $100. Well I didn't have $100 so I just took it back home. Low and behold it hasn't had the charge battery icon come up since! He must have cleared out the error code I think. Anyway, that was two years ago and it still runs, though the battery definitely doesn't last near as long as it used to. At least it still works for now and gives me time to save up for a newer one.

OP:

Why don't you just take it back to the Apple Store and pay for a new battery?
I believe it's $199 (which is supposed to include parts and labor, make sure you have an understanding about this before you put it into their hands).

Might solve all your problems for not that much $$$$.

Consider: a battery is a "wearable item" -- it gets used up over time, and requires replacement. Just one of "the features" of owning a laptop... ;)

You got over 4 years out the battery. That is about their lifespan. Take Fishrrman's advice and get the battery replaced. They will do another check before they replace it. And it is likely they will do a top cover (battery, keyboard, trackpad, and Al top case) replacement. Price is $199, per https://support.apple.com/mac/repair/service
