Battery icon tells me I have no batteries available

I'm being told by my battery icon that I have no batteries available, which is distinctly not the case. If I remove the power adapter from my MBP, everything continues to function normally.

I noticed last night that the battery icon and MagSafe indicator continued to show that the battery was charging long after it should have been done (and when I took the adapter off again, it started from 100%).

What's going on?

Have a look at this article and other ones linked therein. Have you applied all software updates? Perhaps try resetting the PMU/SMC, as one of the documents in the link suggests.
