Just to tell a story:
My 17" MBP died a month ago when its GPU decided to give up, so I sent it to get a new GPU replacement and reballed in the UK by BGA Repairs.
After confirmation it was the GPU that died, and getting it repaired, I got my MBP back happily but found that its 312 cycle Battery came up with a warning needed a service.
Since the 17" is now a spare machine (I got myself a 15" rMBP now), the battery was not an issue. So, I put in a 128GB San Disk SSD and installed Yosmite.
When the system rebooted, the Battery Problem disappeared! So that was interesting, that even the MBP's battery is dependent upon software.

Now, lets hope the 17" MBP will last a few more years!
