Battery jumping all over the place

Hi guys,

I have a white 32gb 3gs, i have had it for about 5 months now, and had no problems at all really.
Anyway, today i took my phone off the charger at 100% as usual, and went to work, i looked at my phone about 3 hours later and the battery had gone down to 30%, i hadnt used it in this time. All push is off, 3g is off, data roaming is off, and so is wifi. I was a little confused so i plugged it into the speaker dock at work and the battery instantly jumped up to 89%.
an hour later, it had dropped 20% again.
I read somewhere that having too many safari pages open could be the problem so i made sure that wasn't causing it.
Any idea? do i simply have a now mal functioning iphone or is there something i could be missing?
