My latest phone is the Xs which I purchased last Wednesday. Well, 2 days ago I made the mistake of updating to ios 12.4.1 and now whenever I fully charge the phone, the battery percentage indicator gets stuck at 100% (or 99 or 98%...whatever I happen to let it charge to. I have to go into the settings-->general-->date & time, then uncheck "set automatically, then reclick it to turn it back on, back out, restart the phone and then it will start to the correct battery percentage. I have to do this after every single time I charge the battery. Plus, since the update it seems the battery drains ridiculously fast. I can do maybe a 3 minute check of emails and the battery indicator will show a 3% loss from just that alone.
Battery health shows it's at 100% which is exactly what a 4 day old phone should be at. But the percentage of charge indicator is totally useless like this.
I have also done a factory reset to no avail.
Any suggestions or ideas would be most welcome.

Thanks

Since you already did a factory reset and the problem persists- maybe the phone/charging circuit/battery is a dud.
Take it to Apple

Don't waste time at the genius bar, they will just tell you to do another stupid fresh restore, and after that, they'll give you a refurb.

Since you are within the 14 day window, don't waste your time and just return it and rebuy another one.

That's what I intend to do, thanks.
Throughout the day, I have been tinkering and I think I have found that it's not actually that the battery indicator is working incorrectly but that the battery may just need some calibrating. What I am now noticing after the last restore that I did, is that yes the battery indicator will indeed come down off 100% if I just give it enough time. In the past, if I charged to 100%, it would take a few minutes of use to hit 99% or less. But now it is taking at least a half hour or so of fairly heavy use to do this...but it certainly does. I'm just not used to seeing it stuck at 100% for this long.

So I think that before I return it (I have about another 9 days or so) I will try and run it down so that the phone turns itself off and then do a full charge again. Then maybe repeat this once or twice. Hopefully this will calibrate it correctly.

It stays on 100% abnormally long to make you feel good about battery life, even though it's sort of false advertising. If that's all it is, it's normal and iPhones have been that way for some time.

Yeah that may be the culprit. You're used to an aged, smaller capacity battery that doesn't hold its charge long. A new XS battery can last a long time. When the battery charge level says 100%, the battery can actually be at 96% but the gauge won't budge. It's aplles way of sort of cheating the gauge, making you think you're at full charge longer than you actually are. So thoughtful of them, always looking out for the customer.

Yeah, kinda like the gas gauge in a car.

Thanks to all.
I ran the battery down last night and put it on the charger at midnight. When I woke up, I randomly went through various things for about a half hour and the indicator came down to 98%.
So I guess everything seems fine and I don't need to take it back.

You might consider taking it back near the end of your return period simply because new phones will be announced tomorrow, and if nothing else, the XS should be less expensive then.

I thought of that but the Xs is the only phone I own right now and there is no telling when price reductions may occur on it. I also have absolutely no interest in the new phones.

You may be able to just go into an Apple Store and ask for a discount immediately after the new ones are released.

Not sure how that relates to any of this. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/battery-stays-at-100-for-too-long.1981011/

Apple really does that? I would have expected everyone getting mad and a lawsuit if true.
